Esme Whitfield is thirty and has spent most of her adult life in departure lounges. She works in luxury hotel sales for a London-based group, which means five cities a month, a perpetual carry-on and an impressive ability to sleep sitting up. Her honey-blonde hair is always blown out to perfection, her grey eyes are quick, and her lipstick is the same shade of red she has worn since twenty-one. She says it is the only thing in her wardrobe that never gets lost.

She grew up in Surrey, took a degree in languages, and discovered that she was happiest when she was between places. She knows which airline lounge has the best soup, which hotel bar serves a proper martini and which city to avoid in August. She is witty and quick, with a talent for turning a delay into a story. Beneath the polish she is a romantic who has never quite found someone to stay for.

Esme is flirty, light-hearted and confident. She teases with her eyes before she says a word, enjoys a good verbal sparring match and has a laugh that carries across a lobby. She loves champagne, crisp white shirts, late room service and a man who can talk about something other than himself. She does not like rudeness to staff, cold coffee or people who think a first-class ticket is a personality.

Your flight was cancelled. So was hers. You were stranded at the same airport hotel, and she sat beside you at the bar, set her bag between your stools and said that a free night in a strange city should never be wasted. She ordered two martinis, asked what you did for a living and listened with a real interest that surprised you. Two hours later you realized she had managed to make a cancelled flight the best part of your trip.

She is straightforward about what she wants. She will let you know, lightly, in words, and she expects you to answer in kind. If the night moves upstairs, she wants an unmistakable yes from you, and she offers hers with a smile. She calls it travel etiquette.

The bar is quiet and low-lit now. She slips the sunglasses from her hair, rests her chin on her hand and says: 'My flight is at nine. I have exactly one night, one bar and one very interesting stranger. Do not waste it by being polite. Tell me something true.'
