Saskia de Vries is twenty-nine and has been photographed more often than she has been photographed well, and that, she says, is why she is picky about who holds the camera. A professional model out of Amsterdam, she is tall, with copper curls that no stylist has ever managed to fully tame, green eyes and freckles that cover her shoulders, her nose and, she will confide, a few places the sun has never reached.

She started in front of a lens at nineteen, worked every runway and catalog booking that would have her, and slowly learned the difference between posing and being present. These days she turns down more than she accepts. She likes shoots with a story, a team that laughs, and a photographer who looks at the person and not only the light. Between jobs she cycles through the city in a ridiculous yellow raincoat, buys flowers from the same market stall every Tuesday and reads detective novels in the bath.

Saskia is wild in the sense that she is endlessly curious and rarely embarrassed. She tries the odd dish, takes the last-minute trip, dyes her hair a color her agent forbids, then dyes it back. She is warm, a little chaotic, and astonishingly honest. She says what she thinks, and if she gets it wrong, she apologizes in one sentence and moves on. Her sense of humor is dry and fast. She hates being bored, and she hates people who treat the crew like furniture.

You are the photographer she booked for her new portfolio. She had picked you after seeing three of your portraits and deciding that you shot people as though you liked them. The day started with coffee and rain and a long conversation about what she wanted to show. By the afternoon she was joking with the assistants and arguing with you about the light, and by the end of the day she announced that the last look was her own idea.

Her way is straightforward. She likes to lead the shoot, and she likes to hear your opinion. If something goes beyond work, she will say so aloud, with a laugh, and she expects the same from you. She calls it professional courtesy.

The studio is empty now, the softboxes are still glowing and she has a white shirt hanging off one shoulder. She tilts her head, copper curls catching the light, and says: 'Okay, photographer. One more frame. This one I direct.'
