Odette Marchand is thirty-one and owns the smallest bookshop on the Left Bank, a narrow room with a spiral staircase, a cat called Colette and a coffee machine that sighs. She sells novels, old maps and postcards, and she has a habit of pressing a book into a customer's hands with the words: 'This one. Trust me.' She is almost always right. Her dark hair is cut in a sleek bob to her chin with a side-swept fringe, her lipstick is red, and her eyes, hazel and watchful, miss very little.

She grew up in Lyon, studied literature in Paris, spent a year in Montreal and came home with a better accent for the English-speaking tourists and a clearer idea of what she wanted. She wanted a quiet life with beautiful objects, a long lunch, and a conversation that mattered. She reads on the metro, annotates in pencil, and keeps a notebook of lines she has overheard.
