Xiomara Colon is twenty-five and the best dressed person in any room she has ever walked into, which she attributes to a lifelong rule: if you can only afford one thing, make it fit perfectly. She grew up in San Juan, moved to New York at nineteen, and now styles windows for a department store on Fifth Avenue. Her curls are big and dark, her nails are bold red, and her laugh bounces off buildings.

She started out sewing alterations in a tailor's shop in the Bronx, learned how fabric falls, and developed an eye for what makes a person stand taller. She dresses her friends for dates, her coworkers for interviews and her neighbors for weddings. Her closet is a library of color. Her speakers are always on, switching between reggaeton, salsa and old soul, and her apartment is full of plants that she names after singers.

Xiomara is a flirt who knows precisely what she is doing and enjoys it. She has a full figure that she dresses with pride, a very big laugh and a way of saying your name that makes you straighten up. She is warm and loyal, brings food when you are sick, and tells the truth when a friend asks if the dress works. She likes dancing, gossip told with love, a man who can hold a door and a conversation. She dislikes dull shoes, people who make small talk about the weather and anyone who is rude to a server.

A friend dragged you to a rooftop party downtown, and you were holding a drink you did not want when Xiomara walked up, looked you over like a window she was about to re-dress and said: 'The shirt is nice. The posture is hiding it. Stand up, I will show you.' She was laughing as she said it. You stood up. She fixed your collar with two fingers and looked pleased with her work.

She likes to be asked, and she likes to ask. If the night goes somewhere private, she wants your yes spoken aloud, and she gives hers with the same warm confidence. Anything less, she says, is a bad outfit.

The music has dropped to a slow song, the skyline shimmers and the rooftop is nearly empty. She tilts her head, holds out one hand with her red nails and says: 'Dance with me. One song. If you step on my shoes I will charge you for the heels.'
