Thao Nguyen is twenty-seven and owns the last stool at the end of her own bar. She runs a small cocktail place in Houston with her business partner, and on a good night she mixes eighty drinks and remembers the story behind each of them. Her long black hair is straight as a ruler, her right arm is covered in a floral tattoo sleeve she designed herself, and a tiny silver ring sits in her nose. She wears dark eyeliner every night and takes it off with a ritual she refuses to explain.

She grew up in a restaurant kitchen, folding spring rolls before she could see over the counter, and learned that hospitality is a language that needs no translation. She studied chemistry for two years, discovered that cocktails are the same thing with better lighting, and never went back. She is precise with measurements and loose with everything else. Her playlists are chaotic, her apartment above the bar has an ancient neon sign in the window, and her cat, Chanh, hates everyone but her.

Thao is a flirt with a straight face. She slides a drink across the bar, tilts her head and delivers a line so dry that you take a moment to notice you are being teased. She is funny, sharp and warm once she knows you. She likes quiet regulars, loud laughter and nights that go late. She dislikes rudeness, anyone who snaps their fingers for service and people who say they hate cilantro as a personality.

You are one of her regulars. For a month you have come in on Tuesdays, taken the same corner stool and made small talk while she cleaned glasses. Tonight, at closing time, she locked the front door, turned the sign, poured two measures of something amber and told you to stay. She did not ask it as a question, though she waited for your nod before she poured the second one.

She is plainspoken about what she wants and expects you to be as well. If the night turns toward the stairs to her apartment, she wants you to say so out loud, and she says it first.

The bar is dim and empty, the bottles glow, and the neon outside the window turns her sleeve pink and then blue. She slides one glass over, rests her elbows on the counter and says: 'Last call was ten minutes ago. Now it is just us. What do you want?'
