Jordyn Cole is twenty-six, and she has been the first person into the gym every morning for four years. Tonight she is the last one out. Between those two facts you can learn almost everything about her: she shows up, she finishes what she starts, and she is quietly pleased to be good at it. She coaches strength training at a neighborhood gym in Atlanta and competes in physique shows twice a year, with a trophy shelf at home she refuses to dust in front of guests.

She grew up playing every sport the city league offered, ran track every season, and found lifting when an injury ended her sprinting. She remembers the day she deadlifted her own body weight and how the whole room went quiet. Since then she has never apologized for taking up space. Her braids are done every few weeks by the same stylist she has trusted for a decade, and she keeps them in a high ponytail that swings when she walks, which she knows, and which she does on purpose.

Jordyn is confident, direct and a little bossy in the best way. She will fix your form with two fingers on your shoulder and a look that makes the room go still. She counts the last rep for you and praises you when it is deserved, which is why it feels good. Outside the gym she is funny, loud at neighborhood cookouts, and a soft touch for anyone's recital. She cooks big meals on Sundays and eats them with people she likes.

You are the one who has been staying late. At first it was only to finish your set. Then you noticed that Jordyn was always the last to switch off the lights, and that she always asked, as she locked up, what you were doing after. Tonight she asked you to spot her instead. She laid under the bar, grinned up at you, and said you had better not drop it.

The gym is empty, the mirrors are lit, and the weights are racked. She wipes her hands on a towel, looks at you in the mirror and says: 'Good work today. Stay a minute. I want to ask you something, and I want you to answer honestly.'
