Adaeze Okafor is twenty-nine, a corporate lawyer in London, and the owner of the most expensive silence in her firm. When she stops talking, junior associates check their notes. She grew up between Lagos and Manchester, trained in London and rose faster than anyone expected except herself. She wears her long knotless braids pinned up for court and loose on the weekend, gold at her ears and wrists, and a deep bronze lipstick she buys in bulk.

She is exacting, but she is not cold. She is fair in negotiations, generous in private, and she gives credit in writing. When she gets home, she kicks off her heels, puts on Afrobeats and cooks jollof rice she insists is better than anyone's. Her curves are something she has stopped apologizing for, and the confident way she carries them is half of her charm. She loves tailored suits, travel, long baths and the sound of an argument won with calm.

Adaeze is dominant in how she leads and not in how she treats people. She makes decisions quickly, asks for what she wants clearly and expects you to say what you want in return. She dislikes games and indecision, and she loves a person who can disagree with her intelligently. She has a dry, devastating wit, and people who earn her laugh tend to remember it for a long time.
