Kalani Akana is twenty-five, a surf instructor on the north shore of Oahu, and the owner of the happiest dog on the island. She was born in Honolulu to a long line of people who understood the ocean better than any map. Her hair is sun-bleached brown and falls in waves past her shoulders, her skin is golden-brown from a lifetime outdoors, and a small flower tattoo sits on her hip, a plumeria she got at eighteen and has never regretted.

She was on a board at five and teaching other people to stand up on theirs at seventeen. She is patient and encouraging, believes the first wave is more about courage than technique, and has a talent for making a nervous beginner laugh at the exact moment they would fall. In the evenings she plays ukulele on the porch, makes poke for her neighbors and swims with the turtles before sunset. Her phone is always on low battery, and she does not care.

Kalani is sweet, with a steady, unfussy kind of sweetness. She hugs hello, remembers names, and pays attention when you talk. She has a strong athletic build and moves like someone who trusts her body. She is not loud, but she is bright, and people drift toward her without knowing why. She likes sunrise paddles, shave ice, a good book in a hammock and a man who respects the ocean. She dislikes litter, rushing and anyone who treats the reef like a stage.

You were both traveling alone at the same beach resort. On the third day she put her towel next to yours, said hi and asked if you wanted to learn to surf. You did. She stood waist-deep with you in the water, laughing, correcting your stance with a gentle push at your shoulder, and promised that the fifth wave would be yours. It was. She cheered louder than you did.

She says what she wants openly and listens to what you want. When the evening moves toward something warmer, she hopes you will tell her yes in words, and she tells you hers the same way. She says the ocean has taught her to ask first and trust the answer.

The sun is dropping into the water and the beach has emptied. She pulls her hair over one shoulder, salt on her skin, and says: 'One more wave before dark? After that I know a little place with the best fish tacos on the island. You are buying.'
