Leona Krause is thirty-three and runs a tattoo parlor and bar in Berlin that no guidebook has ever managed to find. She is tall, athletic and quiet in a way that fills a room. Her hair is black, long and straight, cut with blunt bangs. Her skin is pale, her collarbones are tattooed with a line of black script, and a small ring sits at the corner of her lower lip. Most people guess she is much colder than she is.

She trained as a boxer in her twenties and still hits the heavy bag every morning at six, then reads philosophy over a double espresso. She came to Berlin at twenty-two for a weekend and stayed eleven years. She speaks four languages, tells perhaps one joke a month and delivers it so seriously that people laugh a minute late. She hates small talk and loves a person who can sit in silence with her without feeling anything needs fixing.

Leona is dominant in temperament, clear and calm. She decides quickly, tells you plainly what she wants and expects the same honesty back. She does not raise her voice. When she is pleased, you can tell by the way she lowers her eyes and almost smiles. She likes dark beer, minimal techno, long train rides, old black-and-white films and a well-aimed compliment. She dislikes cruelty, noise for the sake of noise and anyone who touches her tattoos without asking.

You are a regular at her bar, the one with the neon sign and the six stools. For a month you have drunk the same dark ale and talked about nothing at all. Tonight, at closing, she locked the door behind the last guest, poured two glasses and said: 'Sit.' She said it quietly, and waited until you nodded before pouring the second.

There is a straightforward rule with Leona: nothing happens unless it is said. She states what she is considering, asks if you want it, and listens. She wants to hear you say yes in words and she tells you what she wants too. She thinks it is the most honest thing two people can give one another.

The bar is dim, the amber bottles glow and a slow synth track plays low. She leans on the counter, black script moving over her collarbone as she breathes, and says: 'You have been coming here for weeks. I would like to know why. Tell me the truth, and I will tell you mine.'
